Media Missions

I found this blog with some great articles on media and its use in churches. For example, here’s the intro from a recent article I enjoyed.

Ten Dangers of Advertising ->

Advertising can be one of the most powerful media tools at a church’s disposal. There are plenty of reasons why your church should be using advertising. However, there are also some dangers about advertising. If done the wrong way, Advertising can actually harm your identity. Treat advertising like you would treat visitor. Follow these simple instructions to avoid doing anything that would give people a wrong impression of your ministry.

Bible Visualisations

Bible Cross References, ‘Bible Social Network’, and Distribution of people and places

Chris Harrison, of Carnegie Mellon University, and Christopher Romhild,
of Nordelbische Evangelisch-Lutherische Kirche in Germany, have created a
graphic that shows 63,779 cross-references between different portions
of the Bible. The colored lines are the cross-references. The white bars
at the bottom represent the number of verses in each individual chapter
of the Bible; the long white bar at bottom center would be Psalm 119,
which has 176 verses.

The original web page for this work is at http://www.chrisharrison.net/index.php/Visualizations/BibleViz,  and you can see a zoomable version of the graphic at http://gigapan.org/gigapans/5872/.

Also on his project page is a really interesting ‘Bible Social Network’ map, and another interesting graphic about the distribution of Biblical people and places which shows the entire Bible printed on a sheet of paper .  You can also download high-res versions from his site – some are over 100Mb in size!

Bible.Is Mobile Bible Software

Without trying to start a debate about whether Apple is good or bad, I just wanted to post a couple of useful mobile (iPhone / iPad) apps that I use. Some of them are available on that other operating system Android. 😉

  • Bible. Is is a free app that lets you read or listen to the Bible on the go. It has various versions and includes a both a standard and ‘dramatic’ KJV audio version. Just be aware that it streams the audio off the website so you don’t get surprised by a large 3G data bill. Wireless works as well of course.
  • They also have Android and a web site version as well.

17 Oct :: Edit – the latest version has the option to download all the audio to the local device so you can listen offline now.

The Berean Call

The Berean Call is the ministry of Dave Hunt and T.A. McMahon.

Alert believers in Christ to unbiblical teachings and practices impacting the church.
Exhort believers to give greater heed to Biblical discernment and truth regarding teachings and practices being currently promoted in the church.
Supply believers with teaching, information, and materials which will encourage the love of God’s truth, and assist in the development of Biblical discernment.
Mobilize believers in Christ to action in obedience to the Scriptural command to “earnestly contend for the faith” (Jude 3).
Impact the church of Jesus Christ with the necessity of trusting the Scriptures as the only rule of faith, practice, and a life pleasing to God.

HeLives.com has some good resources, an updated blog of new resources (probably updated more often than here) and these 5 quite nice interactive resources.

Been Thinking About

beenthinking.org – If you found the little inserts that come with Our Daily Bread called ‘Been thinking about’ by Mart De Haan of RBC Ministries interesting then you might like to check out the online version.

Creation Magazine Live

Creation magazine LIVE
looks to be an interesting new series by Creation Ministries International. You can download video of all the series for free distribution as they become available. Perhaps if you have a broadband connection you could download a set for your church library to share with those that wouldn’t otherwise have access to this, and perhaps convert them to normal DVD Video for those that don’t have a computer.
